RSS Newsfeed

What is RSS?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, and is also often referred to as a 'newsfeed'. What these RSS newsfeeds provide is a quick and easy way to stay up to date with your favourite websites' news headlines. Except when using RSS, you don't even have to visit the site, the site comes to you.

Many sites now provide an RSS newsfeed of their content and lastest news. More are likely to follow suit as RSS newsfeeds become more widespread.

How Do I Use An RSS Newsfeed?

In order to read an RSS newsfeed, you will need to install a News Reader. This program will collect the news and display it, much the same as how you would check your emails, except you are checking news headlines.

Once you have a News Reader installed, you then choose the newsfeeds you want to 'subscribe' to.

Where Do I Get News Reader From?

A good News Reader to start with is Feed Reader, a free News Reader for Windows PC's.

There are many other News Readers available, some are free and some are available as a trial version which then require you to purchase the program after an amount of time. A good place to start looking for a News Reader is on Google's Directory of Newsreaders.

Note: Not all of these News Readers are designed for Microsoft Windows, so please bear this in mind when choosing.

How Do I Subscribe To An RSS Newsfeed?

The procedure for subscribing to a newsfeed will vary slightly depending on which News Reader you are using. However, the vast majority of the time, it will involve inserting the RSS newsfeed's web address into your News Reader.
For example, the address of the csma RSS newsfeed is:
http://www.csma-online.co.uk/news/rss.php

Once your News Reader knows this address, it can grab the latest headlines, as and when they appear.
